Good News! Afghan student and journalist, Sayed Pervez Kambaksh, has been freed.
Kambaksh, was originally sentenced to death for blasphemy after he simply downloaded from the internet and circulated to classmates an article about women's rights under Islam. But we, together with thousands of human rights and women's rights advocates, protested. He then received a reduced sentence of 20 year in prison.
But today we received the best news of all. Finally Sayed Kambaksh has been freed! He was secretly pardoned by Afghan President Hamid Karzai and has reportedly left the country due to fear of reprisals.
Thank you to your support and the support of thousands of feminists worldwide who petitioned President Karzai for a presidential pardon of Kambaksh. Our voices made a difference.
