Tea Partyers" are descending on the Capitol to 'kill' health insurance. While right wingers demonstrate, let your Representatives and Senators know you want Affordable Health Care for America Act with the Public Option now.
Women gain big time with the House act that combines three House committee bills and was just released on October 29th by Speaker Pelosi. It is being debated on the House floor right now and the vote will be on Saturday evening.
This is just a short list of what woman gain. The bill:
  • Prohibits charging women more than men for health insurance, eliminating gender rating. Right now women pay on the average almost 50% more.
  • Bans all Pre-Existing Conditions of any kind. Right now, domestic violence, pregnancy, and c-sections can be considered pre-existing conditions.
  • Requires that insurance plans include maternity coverage.
  • Expands Medicaid to include individuals under 150% of the federal poverty level. Currently, Medicaid only covers up to 100% of the poverty level for the disabled, blind, pregnant women or elderly are covered.
  • Improves Medicare-closes the "Donut Hole" on prescription coverage.
  • Increases access-less than half of U.S. women have access to affordable health insurance. The new insurance exchange for individuals without health insurance and for small businesses, which will go into operation in 2013, will include a public option and will subsidize premiums for individuals from 150% of federal poverty level to 400%.
  • Requires coverage for preventive health services, such as mammograms and pap smears without co-pays.
Let your Senators and Representatives know you want reform with no crippling anti-abortion amendments. Right now, some 85% of private policies cover abortion--we can't go backwards. The current bill has an abortion compromise amendment. However, some anti-abortion ideologues want to use health reform to ban abortion coverage in private health insurance policies that woman pay for with their own money.
We cannot afford to wait. People are suffering and dying without health insurance. A recent Harvard study estimates that 45,000 Americans a year die because they do not have health insurance and can't afford treatment. We need health insurance reform now.
