3 things you can do THIS WEEK to promote immigration reform

Comprehensive immigration reform to tackle all the problems of our broken immigration system, as opposed to the unrealistic and expensive enforcement-only strategies favored by some, enjoys bipartisan support in poll after poll.
But how can we give it bipartisan demand to push Congress to make good on President Obama's pledge to "to do everything in my power" to move legislation forward this year?
Here's three things you can do THIS WEEK.
Step One. Come to our immigration forum this week!

Tuesday, June 15th, 7 - 9 PM

Fixing A Broken System:

Why We Need Comprehensive Immigration Reform Now!

The Tank / 354 West 45th Street
New York, NY 10036 (bet. 8th and 9th Aves.)
Speakers include:
• Chung-Wha Hong, Executive Director of New York Immigration Coalition
• Gonzalo Mercado, Executive Director of El Centro del Immigrante
• Amy Sugimori, Executive Director of La Fuente
• Tim Foley, Policy Director, Greater NYC for Change
Forum cosponsored by

Step Two. Call City Council Speaker Christine Quinn at (212) 564-7757 and urge her to let Resolution 0224-2010 come to the floor.
30 member of the City Council have co-sponsored this resolution, which calls for an economic boycott of Arizona by New York City in response to their draconian anti-immigrant law SB 1070. With a majority of council members signing on, the resolution would pass - if only Speaker Quinn would bring it to the floor for a vote.
Call Speaker Quinn and ask her to let New York follow the lead of Boston, San Francisco, Austin, Los Angeles, Seattle, El Paso and thirteen other cities in boycotting Arizona until they repeal their misguided and harmful law. Ask her to bring the resolution to the floor for a vote!
Step 3. Call Senator Schumer at 212-486-4430 and ask him to pass the DREAM Act out of committee.
New York students just completed a 10-day hunger strike outside of Senator Schumer's office protesting his failure to keep his promise to pass the DREAM Act out of the Subcommittee on Immigration. This bipartisan legislation would allow immigrants who meet certain requirements to have an opportunity to enlist in the military or go to college with a path to citizenship. Young adults who qualify to serve our country or go to college shouldn't be denied because their parents brought them here illegally years ago.
Senator Schumer chairs the Subcommittee on Immigration and promised to pass the DREAM Act by Memorial Day. Call his office to say these students have waited long enough - it's time to pass the DREAM Act out of committee and bring it to the floor.
