Pro-Choice Election Results in NY
We are thrilled to announce major pro-choice victories in yesterday's election.
Thanks to your support, activism, and voting power, we achieved victory for the entire slate of pro-choice statewide candidates last night!
Congratulations to Andrew Cuomo, who thoroughly defeated Carl Paladino to become New York's next governor! Carl Paladino was the most extreme anti-choice gubernatorial candidate our state has ever seen, but New Yorkers thoroughly rejected his divisive rhetoric and chose a leader who will put New Yorkers' progressive values first.
We are especially excited to congratulate New York's next attorney general, Eric Schneiderman. Eric Schneiderman has been a champion for reproductive rights throughout his life and he made choice a key issue in his campaign. He will be a staunch advocate for the women of New York as attorney general and we congratulate him wholeheartedly.
We also congratulate pro-choice Comptroller Tom DiNapoli on his re-election victory!
On the federal level, we are thrilled that New York's pro-choice U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer were re-elected by wide margins! We applaud them and know that they will continue to ensure that New York is a leader in the Senate when it comes to women's health and rights.
That's a victory for the entire slate of pro-choice statewide candidates!
Unfortunately, New York did lose a number of our pro-choice allies in the U.S. House of Representatives, taking us farther away from our goal of having a pro-choice majority in the House and contributing to the loss of Democratic control and pro-choice leadership.
In the state Senate, we won an important race in Queens, where Tony Avella prevailed in a staggering defeat of anti-choice stalwart Frank Padavan. Thanks in no small part to our efforts and those of scores of fed-up, pro-choice New Yorkers, Padavan's 38-year run in the state Senate came to an end last night. Congratulations also to David Carlucci, who won last night in SD 38.
We're keeping a close eye on the three as-yet undetermined races in the Senate – Sen. Antoine Thompson (SD 60), Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer (SD 37), and Sen. Craig Johnson (SD 7). The outcome of these races will determine the fate of the Senate leadership.
With victories in many hard-fought races, we retained a pro-choice majority in the New York State Assembly.
NARAL Pro-Choice New York, and you, our core supporters across the state, played a key role this season in educating New Yorkers about the extreme anti-choice positions of several candidates. Press events, rallies and phone banks that reached over 15,000 pro-choice New Yorkers were just some of the ways we reached out to New Yorkers. Through mail to key Senate districts and targeted television and radio ads that provided information about Carl Paladino and Dan Donovan's extreme anti-choice positions, we successfully demonstrated how important it is to ensure that New York remains a haven for reproductive rights!
Thank you for your help all along the way, and congratulations to all the pro-choice winners across the state and up and down the ballot.
