Your calls ARE WORKING: please keep fighting for VAWA to include Indian country, immigrant and LGBTQAI victims

We blogged about this a week ago, and your calls/emails ARE WORKING.  Please find below an updated action alert from Pat Reuss of the National Organization for Women (NOW), who was/is one of the main people working for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

Hi NOW board and state leaders – you have been just great out there working on VAWA.  Our opponents (Phyllis Schlafly, Concerned Women for America and all those pundits who regularly work in shelters and crisis centers and are such experts, NOT) are still protesting that we’ve added “new” victims just to show up the Republicans.  Hey, they can do that all by themselves.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hopes to bring VAWA up for a vote SOON so every new sponsor or supporter that we bring on board, the better.  If your Senator won’t or can’t sponsor VAWA, try to get their commitment to vote for cloture so the bill can at least be debated.  Stand firm in NOW’s resolve to include Indian country, immigrant and lgbt victims in VAWA.  Let me know if you talk to any staff and get any new information.  Senator Leahy appreciates all of NOW’s hard work out there in the states.  Here’s some stuff to do – or keep doing.
thanks and love, Pat
