3rd Annual New York Abortion Access Fund Bowl-a-thon

On Saturday April 29th, 2012 over 200 pro-choice New Yorkers gathered at Bowlmor Lanes near Union Square to strike down barriers to abortion access in the Third Annual New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF) bowl-a-thon. More than 40 teams joined together to raise over $73,000 for NYAAF, making us the #1 bowl-a-thon in the country!

Teams were creative in both names and costumes; names ranged from The Hunger Frames, The Ballin' Bowler-ina Grrrls, The RU 300’s, to The Abowlifacients, and many more. Teams consisted of co-workers, partners, best friends and children. Everyone came out to bowl on the 29th including NYAAF board members, NARAL Pro-Choice NY interns, PPNYC Activist Council Members, One Voice to Save Choice members, and NYAAF supporters.

Several of our very own NOW-NYS Young Feminist Task Force supported the bowl-a-thon, raised funds, bowled all day and had the wonderful opportunity to meet and mingle with other young feminists all over NYC.  Because of the funds raised through this bowl-a-thon NYAAF is able to continue to ensure abortion is safe, legal, accessible and FUNDED.

Thank you to everyone who supported, contributed, and took part in the bowl-a-thon, without you NYAAF wouldn’t be able to help the women of New York State.

Not only was the bowl-a-thon a huge success here in New York for NYAAF but also for the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF). With 2,064 participants on 448 teams, 12,141 total donations, over $469,000 raised for abortion access coast to coast! Over 80% of the donations were $50 or under. Nearly a third of the donations were $15 and under.

This is a fun and amazing way for each and every one of us to support abortion access. Abortion funds make it possible for women limited by their financial, geographic, or familial situation to access support from people who will respect a woman’s right to choose and who will do everything in their power to help.  Next year we hope to see a Young Feminist Task Force bowling team!!
