12th & Delaware

Last Monday, several members of the Young Feminist Task Force were fortunate enough to get together to watch the HBO premiere of the new documentary 12th & Delaware.
We first had a scrumptious pot-luck dinner on the rooftop, and could not have had a more perfect evening. After that we headed in to the apartment to enjoy the film.
The group came into the film with varying degrees of knowledge and experience about crisis pregnancy centers, but everyone certainly learned a lot and were exposed to the tactics and manipulations that these organizations use to keep women from making fully informed medical decisions.
Of course the most obvious attempt at manipulating women was their tactical placement of their "pregnancy care center" directly across the street from a comprehensive women's health center. Other tactics seen in the film were using ultrasounds, manikins, and graphic and unrealistic photos to manipulate women, lying to women about gestational age to interfere with their decision making process, and offering pregnant women support that they don't actually have the resources to provide. It was clear in many of the scenes that these people are not, by any means, acting in the best interest of women.
If you are interested in getting involved to help combat the influence of CPCs in the NYC area, please contact us for more information.

Spreading lies about abortion

Is this an ad for a legitimate medical facility?

The answer may surprise you.
"Crisis pregnancy centers" (CPCs) spend millions of dollars on misleading advertisements, portraying themselves as safe havens for women in need.
Their real goal? To make women feel too guilty or scared to choose abortion by providing information that is medically inaccurate and manipulative.
But we're not buying it. That's why we're launching an online quiz that unmasks the lies these fake clinics tell women every day. Test your CPC know-how – take our short quiz today.
NARAL Pro-Choice America has been fighting against CPCs' deceptive tactics for years. Time and time again, we've found that CPCs make unsubstantiated claims about legal abortion and even birth control – all intended to deceive the women who come to them for help.
CPCs are everywhere, from Seattle to Brooklyn, in politically progressive and conservative communities alike. And they pose as comprehensive health-care clinics. But most are unlicensed and unregulated organizations staffed by anti-choice volunteers who intentionally misinform women.
Can you spot what's fact and what's fiction? Take our short CPC quiz and see if you're right!
Thank you for all that you do to protect a woman's right to choose.
My best,
Nancy Keenan
President, NARAL Pro-Choice America

This weekend: We will present @ NOW-Northeast Regional Conference in Albany

This Saturday, April 17, 2010, my fellow NOW – NYS Young Feminist Task Force members and I will present at the NOW-Northeast Regional Conference. We had a blast at the Feminist Majority Foundation Young Feminist Leadership Conference a few weeks ago, and cannot wait for this trip.

We will present on a panel about young feminism and beyond.  I will moderate the following outline, with an introduction about the work the NOW-NYS Young Feminist Task Force engaged in the last year.

Meghan/Arielle - CPC's and anti-choice propaganda.
  • Arielle Cohen: Conducted a very candid interview with Lorraine Gariboldi, Executive Director of Life Center of LI which is parent to Long Island's AAA Pregnancy Resource Center in order to research methods and policies of LI area CPCs.
  • Meghan Shalvoy:Organized on campus at Stony Brook University to protest and counteract anti-choice propaganda which was circulated on campus by the Long Island Coalition for Life, a group of CPCs and other anti-choice organizations.
  • Arielle and Meghan plan to first introduce CPC structure, funding, etc, then move on to the methods and misinformation they use to manipulate women which puts their health and lives at risk.
Layla Love & Arielle Cohen: use of media and art as activism.
  • Layla: We must use visual media to attrack the attention of our peers, and also--veteran feminist, the international community and the 'enemy or opposition'...   The telling of her-story is key for this movements flourishing so I would like to offer inspiration in that way.
  • Arielle Cohen: will talk about the arts and the utter need for us to embrace the internet as a vauled resource for our activist toolkit. She is working on an interactive blog of interviews and photos with other feminists. She will highlight the effects of Art and in the history of the movement and call for a renewal (while focusing on the exciting new medium).
Micah Bochart: Men & Feminism
  • Identifying some of the more common reasons why men might not feel inclined to join in the movement, why they might not recognize women's rights as human rights, and what basic steps could be taken to create a culture of engagement.

We hope you can join us.

Sincerely,
Jerin Alam

Feminist Majority Foundation fall campaigns & conferences

I love FMF (Feminist Majority Foundation), THE organization to go to for help as a campus feminist activist.  The campus organizers have always helped The Hunter College Women's Rights Coalition, which I was the president of from 2007 - graduation in 2009.  They rock!
