Action Alert: Help secure funding for Victims of Crime before Oct 12 deadline

October 12, 2009 is “VJ Day” (Victim Justice Day) for America’s victim assistance field. This date marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). And in 2010, it is now our deadline for securing Congressional co-sponsorship of The Crime Victims Fund Preservation Act.

The Crime Victims Fund Preservation Act of 2009 (S. 1340 and H.R. 3402) would dramatically increase the minimum amount of VOCA funds made available for the next five years from the non-taxpayer Crime Victims Fund. Under these bills, the minimum VOCA cap would increase by 23 percent each year through 2014 and would provide critically needed resources to help the millions of crime victims who receive VOCA supported assistance every year.

This week, the US Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus will be sending a letter to solicit co-sponsorship of The Crime Victims Fund Preservation Act, so the timing of “VJ Day” is critical.

Our Challenge To The Field: Before VJ Day on October 12, we’d like Congress members to receive at least 2,500 emails or phone calls urging them to sign on as co-sponsors of S. 1340 or H.R. 3402 – The Crime Victims Fund Preservation Act – 100 contacts for each of the 25 years since VOCA was signed into law.

Extensive background resources about the Act can be found at: to inform your contacts with your Congressional delegation, both House and Senate. You can easily link to your House Members' contact information at:, and to your US Senators at:

We urge you to make these important contacts before October 12th. Now more than ever, your support is needed to ensure sustained VOCA funding for the next five years. Please forward this email to your colleagues, allied professionals, family members, friends and whomever can support this important grass roots effort. Your investment of 30 minutes to contact your Congress Members and spread the word is critical to our success! As always, we appreciate your consideration of our request, and thank you in advance for your immediate action!
