Wed, Oct 27: Strategies for Counteracting the Erosion of Reproductive Rights in the US Today

Strategies for Counteracting the Erosion of Reproductive Rights in the US Today

Wednesday, October 27, 2010, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

2 MCLE Credits: 2 Professional Practice; Transitional and Non-transitional

NYCLA's Women's Rights Committee is proud to co-sponsor a very special evening discussing the hot button issue of reproductive rights. Some of the topics to be explored include:

  • Overview of reproductive rights law;
  • Analysis of current case law and recent state and federal legislation, including coverage of abortion services in the health care reform bill and regulations creating high risk pools
  • Legal implications of partisan strategies to restrict reproductive rights under state and federal law
  • Practical ways to protect reproductive rights

Our outstanding speakers include Kathryn Kolbert, currently Director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College. Ms. Kolbert is a renowned civil rights attorney and former President of People For the American Way (PFAW). Previously she oversaw a program on law and American life at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center. In 1992 she argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which preserved a woman's constitutional right to reproducrive choice. She also co-founded the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy and has a long career as a public interest attorney.
