Over the past two years, Albany has taken $260 million dollars of funding reserved for public transit to balance the state's overall budget. Albany's actions left transit riders with higher fares and the loss of 2 subway lines and 37 bus routes.
Last Tuesday, WE ACT and community leaders from Northern Manhattan went to Albany to talk with elected officials about the impact of these cuts. They also discussed the Transit Funding Lockbox Act (A06766B) introduced by State Senator Golden and Assemblymember Brennan.  If passed, this legislation would prohibit the diversion of dedicated transit money to other budget areas.
