Finally - Nancy Pelosi is meeting with President Obama on Thursday. It's time for them to stand up together for women, children and struggling families - and don't let this be our "last stand."
Please call AND email both President Barack Obama and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and urge them to stand firm and united AGAINST slashing the heart out of community services and human needs programs -- programs that disproportionately serve and employ women - and FOR fair taxes on corporations and multi-millionaires, and FOR a jobs program that puts women as well as men back to work.
It's crunch time for the federal budget negotiations, as President Obama personally heads into meetings with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), whose signals thus far suggest he thinks the president will throw women under the bus if that's what it takes to get a budget deal. We can't let that happen -- women's economic security and lives are on the line.
How can the richest nation in the world defund programs that keep less fortunate women, children and seniors from hunger, help them go to school, heat their homes and give them a hand-up when they need it most? Promoting the general welfare does not mean padding the pockets of the wealthiest and hoping they do the right thing by creating more jobs, paying decent wages and obeying the laws. We know better.
We are thrilled that Leader Pelosi is going to have a seat at the table. We're only sorry that she wasn't included from the very beginning. Your message to the president and House leader: please work together to ensure that multi-millionaires and corporations pay their fair share of taxes, and that the federal budget is not balanced on the backs of hard-working women who need shelters and after-school programs to stay open and good jobs to support their families.
