Feminist "my lingerie play" by Diana Oh Nov 16th

From our member Siobhan:

I'm typing with one hand, which cramps, so I'll keep this short---

I'm attending a really awesome looking FREE installation called "my lingerie play" by Diana Oh. It's about street harassment, intersectionality, and underwear. It seems. I'm going Sunday, November 15th. We have to rsvp in advance, so check out this link if you'd like to go out and hang out and support this woman's work!!

NOW YFA member to speak at an Orthodox feminist conference

At the first virtual chapter of NOW, we are so proud of our member Talia, who will be speaking at an Orthodox feminist conference. She is one of our diverse members who proves that your religious affiliation - whether orthodox, reformed, agnostic, or atheist - does not have to hinder your feminism. Like me, she argues that our religions require us to be feminists. Please read about Talia, who is a Harvard student, below.

What's Your Feminist Tree? Giving thanks to your feminist roots and spreading your feminist branches: #myfem2tree Tumblr & Google Hangout

Who inspired your feminism? Was it your grandmother who awakened you to the inequalities women and girls face? Was it your mom who led by example? Perhaps a teacher who grew into a mentor? Maybe it was the work of an author you never met, like Bell Hooks’s Feminism is for everyone. Maybe it was more recent, like the speech from Emma Watsonwho urged both women and men to reclaim the other f-word and take on the battle for gender equality.

Give her - or him, or them, or it - some proper thanks during our #myfem2tree tweetchat on Thursday, October 16, 2014, 1pm EST – 2pm EST. We want to know where your feminist roots began: whether from a person, book, or organization. And we also want to know how you plan to spread your branches through the feminist activism you are engaging in or hope to engage in.

According to France, biggest threats to public safety are Muslim women

The articles below describe the Islamophobic atmosphere in France, which makes Muslim women feel alienated and want to leave.

The French Government supposedly banned hijabs, burqas and other religious head coverings out of safety concerns. Because, you know, there are such high rates of Muslim women running around committing crimes. In fact, Muslim women are the most dangerous group of people in the world, responsible for physically and or sexually assaulting one in three women worldwide. Oh, wait! That's actually men. Men are the most dangerous group of people, responsible for over 90% of the assaults that happen every day, including every nine seconds in America alone. If the French government actually cared about the safety of its people, it would look into the toxic patriarchal culture, which tells men they must be violent to be masculine.*  Instead, they are focusing on a made-up problem to excuse their racism and sexism.

*Most men are not violent, but violent men, especially rapists, will have multiple victims.

Easy and inexpensive Feminist Halloween costumes

If you are as sick of sexy-fill-in-the-blank costumes for women as me, you probably heard of Take Back Halloween. The website is a “costume guide for women with imagination.” I love their efforts. However, being a busy New Yorker who works to support my feminism habit, I want something easy and inexpensive. Some of my suggestions are below.

1.     Virginia Woolf: Last year, I used black eyeliner for wolf makeup and wore the cutout of the map of Virginia around my neck.
2.     bell hooks: Last year, my hubby wore bells around his neck with hooks and carried a copy of "Feminism is for everybody."
3.     Malala Yousafzai: Ok, this one and below are easy and inexpensive if you are like me or over 1 billion people in the world who own desi outfits. Just wear a salwar kameez with a chador and hold a book or one of Malala’s quotes. I like, “"I want every girl, every child, to be educated."
4.     Begum Roquia Sakhawat Hussain: Bangladeshi and Muslim feminist who was one of the first female writers of science fiction, who predicted solar power in 1905. Just wear a sari and carry a copy of Sultana's Dream.

Please add yours.

Sat, Oct 18: Students Active for Ending Rape (SAFER) listening forum

Are you a student passionate about improving the way colleges and universities prevent and respond to sexual violence, or are you interested in learning more about the issue? Students Active for Ending Rape (SAFER) is a national non-profit that supports and empowers students to reform their schools' sexual assault policies. We would like to hear your thoughts on the current anti-campus sexual assault movement, the culture surrounding this issue on your campus, as well as what resources and support you would need the most to effect change on your campus.

SAFER is hosting a series of listening forums throughout the country thanks to a grant from the Avon Foundation, one of which will occur at the Planned Parenthood NYC offices in SoHo onSaturday October 18th. We will facilitate a forum for students citywide to share their thoughts. We will be documenting our findings in a qualitative research report that will inform changes we make to our student activist trainings and programs next year, which will help us provide the best possible support and resources for students nationwide. Lunch and snacks will be provided to all participants.

If you're interested or want more information, please email SAFER board member Marybeth Seitz-Brown at marybeth@safercampus.org.

PBS Documentary on Muslim woman who valiantly fought the Nazis

I am so glad PBS is focusing on this story, especially with the increased tension in the Middle East. Noor Inayat Khan was remarkable, not only because she was another Muslim protecting Jews from Nazis. Reading her story, there is a common theme of Allied lives being lost because men in power failed to take female fighters seriously.

Playboy publishes anti-street-harassment post

The below is good, but it doesn't take away Playboy's decades of objectifying women. Perhaps they're jumping on the feminism band wagon, since it seems to be more popular these days.

Contact the 37 Senators Who Today Voted For Millionaires Over Students

From the godmother of the Violence Against Women Act and longtime NOW activist Pat Reuss:

These Senators and their selfish vote hurts all our kids and all our college students and all of us who still have staggering, high interest student loans to pay off.  Send an email or call every one of them.  You do not have to live in their state to be hurt by their vote.  Find their contact info here:

Against Islam: A Fight as U.S. Girls Face Genital Cutting Abroad

The below is so scary. It makes me BEYOND angry that it's so prevalent in countries that are predominantly Muslim. It is nowhere to be found in The Qur'an and goes against Islamic principles of sex being a gift both men and women are supposed to enjoy.

Women Living Under Muslim Law Gazette - What's been happening in the network?

Last abortion clinic in MI: NOW board member Laurie on HuffPost Live

Please watch the interview of Laurie Roberts, my sister NOW National Board member and incredible activist in MI. I have to stop reading the tweets, especially from the white man who talks about no exception in cases of rape or incest. I am so grateful for feminists like Laurie who stay in less liberal states. I know I'm privileged to be in NY.

My alma mater Hunter College named in US federal sex assault investigation

My alma mater Hunter College was named in a US federal sex assault investigation. This is so sad, especially since it was the Hunter College student govt, WGS department and the Women's Rights Coalition who were instrumental in helping me propose and help pass the CUNY-wide sexual-assault policy. After graduation, I tried to stay involved to help implement the policy, but didn't find students who were able or interested in continuing the anti-rape fight. SAFER, which helped me throughout the process to pass the CUNY policy, mentions how that is a huge problem with ending rape on college campuses. Active students will graduate and no one will take up the mantle. As an alumna, our reach is severely limited. As someone who works full time and is on two separate non-profit boards, my time is also limited. I really hope this wakes up current students and they will get involved.

Of all the different organizations I am involved with, I am the most grateful for the below, which transforms mostly underprivileged young girls and women into leaders. I have seen the incredible work first-hand through meeting the trainees before and after the program. I hope you will please support this organization, which is run on a shoestring budget. The intensive summer training program is completely free to the students, including meals. Every contribution helps. Thanks!

Take Action to Secure Funding for Lifesaving DV/SA/anti violence Programs

From the Godmother of VAWA, Pat Reuss:

Sign a letter calling on Congress to increase funding for VAWA and related programs!

April 3, 2014

Please forward widely!

Take action to secure funding for lifesaving programs

As we begin Sexual Assault Awareness Month, tell your Members of Congress that you care about funding for programs that serve victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Please click here to add your organization's name to this letter which will be sent to Congress with the clear message: We can’t turn away victims in their time of need.

Deadline for signing on is Friday, April.  Please remember to complete this form.

*Note: this letter is for ORGANIZATIONS, not individuals.  Watch this space for actions for individuals later in the Spring.

Last year, we all worked to pass an inclusive Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that would meet the needs of many more victims.  But without adequate funding, the law cannot meet the needs of all victims.  Let’s make sure that VAWA can live up to its potential and promise by urging Congress to fund VAWA and related programs.

Watch this space for action alerts for individuals.

Looking for NM feminist contacts

Do you know feminist contacts in NM, who might be able to attend the National NOW conference in Albuqurqee from June 27-29? Action Alert: 60 years in prison for firing warning shot against abusive husband

NOW

It's unconscionable that a woman who stands her ground against an abusive ex-husband could get 20 years in prison - never mind 60!

Marissa Alexander was given a 20 year sentence for firing a non-lethal warning shot at her ex-husband, moments after he choked her and just days after giving birth. State Attorney Angela Corey prosecuted her anyway. The appeals court has overturned Alexander's conviction -- and now Corey wants a 60 year sentence against her.

This isn't the first time State Attorney Angela Corey has misused her power. She needs to go.

Corey claims she is only doing her job. But in reality, she exercises broad prosecutorial discretion. Who does she think she's fooling?

Will you email State Attorney Angela Corey and demand that she resign?

The nation has watched in horror as this racist, sexist State Attorney has misused her position over and over. For that, she should resign and refrain from public office -- for 60 years.

It's clear that Angela Corey cannot do her job fairly, equitably or competently - so she must resign.

Thank you for all you do for women's equality,

--Terry, Chitra, Bonnie and the rest of us here at NOW

Action Alert: Pimps lobbying Amnesty International to Re-define trafficking of women

Action Alert: Submit your photos, videos & posts of animals + feminism

Submit on our Tumblr or email us at youngfeminists at gmail dot com

Our event was posted on the One Billion Rising website. Please join us and share widely.

NOW’s First Virtual Chapter Young Feminists & Allies (YFA) was excited to join the One Billion Rising activities in NYC and beyond last year and is excited to participate in the justice campaign this year.

As a virtual chapter, we want to augment our participation in local events across the country with online activism. We ask everyone to submit pictures and blog posts on how justice for sexual-assault and domestic violence victims and survivors intertwines with animals.

Please share photos of you with your pets and posts discussing any or all of the below:

1. How animals can help heal individual survivors and communities through their love for us and our love for them

2. How animals can help us with our activism

3. How the victimization of animals is similar to how society victimizes women, indigenous people and other minorities

4. How we must look at interconnectedness of all forms of oppression to gain justice for all

Submission Guidelines:

1. Please do not include any graphic images of victimization of animals or people

2. Since we want to open this up to children, please do not include nudity, although we have nothing against it

Today is International Language Day, which commemorates Bangladeshi activism

Did you know that today is International Mother Language Day. Today was chosen to commemorate Bangladeshi activism. The date represents the day in 1952 when students from different educational institutions such as Dhaka University , Jagannath University , Dhaka Medical College demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bengali, as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka (near High Court), which is the capital of present day Bangladesh. It is also my sister's birthday :)

Valentine's Day Fundraiser

Tired of the same old Valentine’s Day routine? Want to spread some feminist cheer instead of heteronormativity and corporate greed? NOW’s first virtual chapter, Young Feminists & Allies has partnered with NYC-based feminist graphic designer, Jenn-O to create printable Valentine’s Day cards that celebrate womanhood, friendship, consent and activism.

Hop on over to our new Etsy shop to check them out! You can print and personalize these Valentines for only $1.77 – priced to call attention to the on-going gender wage gap.

By purchasing the cards, you will help us build our organization, and grow our capacity to reach young feminists and engage in intergenerational and intersectional dialogue and activism. Plus, you’ll score cool points with your friends and colleagues for being so avant-garde on Valentine’s Day.

Action Alert: free speech and academic freedom-threatened

In a matter of days, the New York State Legislature may put a bill before Governor Cuomo which severely threatens free speech and academic freedom, specifically targeting criticism of Israel. This legislation attacks our basic constitutional rights, as well as New York's public higher education system.

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: the sponsors of this legislation (Speaker Silver is the main sponsor) are trying to sneak this through without public knowledge or even holding public legislative hearings. Right now, the Higher Education Committee has scheduled for this Monday an "off the floor" committee meeting (no announced time) in the Speaker's Conference Room (normally not open to the public) to consider Assembly 8392. The fact that the Assembly leadership is proposing such a bill is outrageous and the fact that they are trying to do so behind closed doors adds insult to injury.
